Call for Applications

“Eurasia Lab & Fellowship Program”

The “Eurasia Lab & Fellowship Program” of the Institut für Europäische Politik (IEP) gives outstanding junior researchers from the regions of Eurasia the opportunity to receive a scholarship to advance their research projects and to get integrated into IEP’s enlarged network of researchers, practitioners and activists working on Eurasia. To this end, the fellows participate and are actively involved in the program events, present themselves and their research project to the network in an online conference and receive continuous online mentoring.

What we Offer:

  • a one-time scholarship of up to 4,500 € to conduct the research project (research phase: September 2021 – December 2021);
  • continuous online mentoring until December 2021;
  • networking opportunities with like-minded researchers, practitioners and activists working on the region;
  • participation and active involvement in the program’s online events

What are the Application Criteria?

The call is open to junior researchers (preferably research teams of 2 or 3 people) who:

  • are affiliated with universities, other research institutions or think tanks from Eastern Europe (Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine), the Southern Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia), and Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan) OR citizens of any of these countries (an affiliation outside the region is possible);
  • are working on their research project with a current and/or forward-looking policy relevance that fulfils the following criteria:
    • It is situated in political science, international relations, economics, contemporary history or a closely related field of study;
    • It has a focus on civil society, human rights, democratic participation or governmental, educational, and justice system reforms in the region;
    • It takes into account the field of EU-Eurasia relations.
  • hold a Master’s or an equivalent degree;
  • have written and oral fluency in English;
  • have Internet access;
  • are willing to advance their research project substantially until the end of the research phase in December 2021 and present their (preliminary) research results at the program’s final conference and/or in a non-written format of publication.

Application Process and Timeline:

Stage One

12 July 2021: Start of application phase
02 August 2021: End of application phase (earlier applications are welcome)

Stage Two

Mid-August (CW 33): From all written applications, a number of pre-selected candidates will be invited to present their research projects as a video presentation (e.g. Prezi Presentation or Microsoft PowerPoint Screencast, max. 10 minutes).

End of August 2021: The final decision will be made.

Beginning of September 2021: Start of fellowship/ research phase

16. September 2021: Conference and Networking event for former and new Fellows December 2021: Concluding Conference

Required documents:

  • curriculum vitae;
  • certificate of Master’s or equivalent degree;
  • short outline of the research project (in English, max. 700 words);
  • statement of motivation why this grant program would be of personal and professional use (in English, max. 500 words);
  • budgetary overview of planned activities
  • not mandatory: example of a relevant publication or university assignment in English.
